Heart is a very complex organ of our body, and also one of the most important one. Its main function is to pump blood throughout the body via the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes. So, I hope one does realise that the more the complex is the organ, the more chances of wear and tear. In today’s article we would be discussing about the heart valve surgery: repair and replacement.
Let’s begin with what is a heart valve surgery and valve replacement cost in India. As the name suggests, heart valve surgery is performed to repair or replace valve in the heart that is not working properly. In India, the average cost of this surgery varies from a range between INR1.5L to 4L although; the prices do differ from hospital to hospital and on the severity of the case. There are four valves in the heart:
Valves control the flow of the blood making it move in one direction through the different chambers or parts of the heart. If a valve is not working correctly, blood flow is impaired. For example, if a valve does not close properly, blood may leak between the chambers or flow backwards, a condition known as valve regurgitation, insufficiency, or incompetence. If a valve is narrowed (also called stenosed), blood flow through the heart may be restricted. If the valve problem is minor, it may be treated with medication. But, if the heart valve damage is severe, a procedure may be required to repair or replace the malfunctioning valve.
Valve repair or replacement may be required if a valve has been damaged by:
- Infection (endocarditis)
- Rheumatic heart disease
- Congenital heart defect
- Mitral and/ or aortic valve disease
- Normal aging and wear
Out of all the types of valve replacement procedure, aortic valve replacement is the most common of them all. It is a procedure in which the patients failing aortic valve is replaced with an artificial heart valve. The aortic valve can be affected by a range of diseases; the valve can either become leaky (aortic insufficiency) or partially blocked (aortic stenosis). Current aortic valve replacement approaches include open heart surgery via sternotomy, minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
Once the surgeon has finished the repair or replacement, the heart is then is started again, and you are disconnected from the heart-lung machine. The surgery can take anywhere from 2-4 hours or more, depending on the number of valves that need to be repaired or replaced. Again, the cost of aortic valve replacement procedure differs from hospital to hospital.
I hope this article helps you know all that you needed to know about the heart valve surgery and the medical conditions under which one has to go through it. In case you know someone going through problem of wear and tear of valve and they have been considering an operation, but have no clue about the process, then this would definitely help them.
